How to Make a Website

Let's pretend, just for the sake of this tutorial, that you're making a graphics site.  Here are all the things you're going to have to do.

  • Get a host

  • If this is your first website, you should probably get a free host because a getting a good paid host will be at least $5 every month.  Some good free hosts are:
                    www.freewebs.com     |     www.geocities.com

  • Make a layout

  • This is your website, so don't be afraid to make your own layout. Even if you're just a beginner, a custom layout is almost always better than a premade one.

  • Make the pages
The first page or the home page is usually called Index or Default.  Your host probably will have that page made, and you just edit it.  From there you can make (assuming this is a graphics site like in the beginning of the tutorial) a banner page, layout page, blinkie page, etc.  Only make a few pages at a time, because it's annoying to see a million links but when you click on them they're all a Coming Soon! page.

  • Add content to each page
Make sure each page has at least on few graphics on it.  If it has a LOT of graphics (or text or whatever) just split it up into seperate pages.  You don't want to have extremely long pages, but if you only have one line of text on a page and and the layout is really long, it looks strange.

  • Make your site known
You can start with a few affiliates and a few topsites, then add more later on when your site is bigger. Don't over-do having affiliates and topsites, though, because with all the buttons it takes forever to load, and you shouldn't just be affiliates because you want to get hits.  Take some time to look at a site before you apply to be their affiliate.

That's it!  Although there could be a lot more depth to each item on the list, this should help you start a website and get your first hits.  Good luck!
