Make a Simple Layout Banner
STEP 1
Open a new file in Photoshop and make the size 650 by 125 pixels (other sizes work fine as well, but this is just a nice, middle-of-the-road size).
STEP 2
Click on the paint bucket and pick the color you want. Fill in the background. (or you can use a gradient or pattern)
STEP 3
Now you can edit and decorate it as much as you want, especially with brushes. I have them on different layers with the blending style set to Overlay.
STEP 4
Add the name of your website. Be sure to make it BIG so people can read it. Also, aligning it in the center can be boring. Try putting it in the lower right corner, so it's like a site logo. Go to File- Save For Web. This greatly reduces the file size.
