When You're Bored of Your Site
Let's face it. Websites always start out exciting, new, and fresh. You (and anyone else helping) are always energized and motivated, so you make fifty billion pages of graphics the first day. After that, it's the second day. Well, it's still pretty cool, but it lost some of that new-day spark. After about a month, it's lost all of its newness. The only hope left is that you really love web design.
If you've ever owned a website for more than a month, you probably know what I'm talking about. It's not just limited to the first month, either; this cycle continues pretty much until you're so totally bored you delete your site, or you get obsessed with web design and keep your site forever. Sometimes it's a tough decision to make. Your site might not have many visitors and you're thinking of picking up a new hobby- this website stuff is just not for you. Before you delete your site, think it over- a lot.
Even if you've just spent a day or so on your site, that's still something. You shouldn't just get up and delete your site. If you have a huge list of reasons, maybe, but if you're just bored with it there are other options. You can cure that Web Designer's Block!
- Take a break
It's tough always working on a site, so if you feel like it's getting to you, just take a break! It doesn't need to be long, just a couple days is probably enough to calm down your brain.
- Look around for inspiration
After any length of making graphics, you might run out of ideas. What do you do? Go to other sites- they don't even have to be about graphics- and see what kind of stuff they have to offer. Maybe you need to try a new style or maybe just some new brushes will do the trick. You shouldn't steal someone's original idea for a graphic, but maybe it'll help you think of something new for your own site.
- Try to learn something about web design that's really complicated
It might not help, but at least it'll put your mind on something else for a while. You might even decide you like CGI a ton and start a free form service for your site. Hey, you never know. :)
I hope this helps you overcome your boredom or designer's block, and remember that even when you have no ideas or inspiration at all, you should still keep your site because you'll probably regret deleting it. :)
